The M’s made some moves this weekend, removing seven players from major league camp. No big moves. Cuban signee Guillermo Heredia being sent to AA Jackson was probably the one of most significance.
However, the M’s did announce that veteran first baseman Gaby Sanchez was given his release. In his 16 spring at-bats, Sanchez did not leave as great a mark as Jesus Montero, Dae-ho Lee, and Stefen Romero who continue the competition for the right handed platoon at first base. And then there were three.
Bullpen woes continue as Charlie Furbush joins Evan Scribner and Ryan Cook among those likely to start the season on the disabled list. Closer Steve Cishek also seems to be coming along slowly, so question marks about the M’s bullpen and its readiness for opening day continue to grow. At the present time it includes Joaquin Benoit, Joel Peralta, David Rollins, Vidal Nuno, Maykol Guaipe, Tony Zych, Jonathan Aro, Joe Wieland, Justin DeFratus and they are pressing left-handed starter Mike Montgomery into a relief role. They are also offering auditions to the stadium audience.
At this point, the bullpen, built on bounce back seasons by a number of key players shows all the rebound of a 2015 Tom Brady football. But there is time and my fingers are crossed. But I confess an interest in the first base platoon most of all. The first shot has been fired.
